Theory provides the maps that turn an uncoordinated set of experiments
or computer simulations into a cumulative exploration.
(Booker, Goldberg, and Holland (1989) Artificial Intelligence 40:235-282)
Welcome to the Computational Laboratories Group at UCSB's Department of Economics. We define a computational laboratory as a well-specified agent-based simulation model coupled with careful experimental design and thorough testing. Our group uses computational laboratories to conduct theory-driven explorations of distributed processes in organizations, agent-based public finance, spatial economics, and Regional Science. Our computational platforms range from C++ on NERSC's Cray T3E to the Santa Fe Institute's Swarm agent-based platform running under Linux and Win98 on Intel-based PCs.
