The Five Year Combined Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Master of Arts in Economics with an emphasis in Business EconomicsThis program provides an opportunity for outstanding students from any engineering major, including computer science, to earn both an undergraduate degree and a Master of Arts degree within five years. Admission ProceduresInterested students should inform the Economics Graduate Office of their interest in pursuing this program at the end of sophomore year if possible, as they need to plan their upper division studies differently from other undergraduates and have their names placed on a pre-enrollment list. At the beginning of their senior year, interested engineering undergraduates apply for admission to the Graduate Division and take the Graduate Record Examination (general test). All applicants must now apply online using the Electronic Application for Graduate Study. If you have specific questions, please contact: Graduate Office Students for whom the recommendation letters are strong and cumulative GPA is at least 3.5 will be granted admission to the program providing all other admission criteria have been met, including submission of GRE scores. For students who do not meet the acceptance requirements to graduate status under the above guidelines, and who have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00, a decision on admission to graduate status will be made after GRE scores and all other admission materials have been received and evaluated. Students have the option of leaving the program with a B.S. or B.A. degree at the end of their senior year if all degree requirements have been met, whether or not they have been admitted to graduate status. Admission to the M.A. program is contingent on students receiving their B.S. in Engineering or their B.A. or B.S. in Computer Science. In addition, students must take: Engineering 100: Engineering Economic Analysis PSTAT 5E: Statistics with Economics and Business Applications Recommended Undergraduate CoursesEconomics 100 A & B: Microeconomic Theory and Policy Economics 101: Static Macroeconomics and Policy Required Graduate CoursesFall: Econ 205A: Economics Decisions Winter: Econ 205B: Economic Decisions Spring: Econ 208: Macroeconomics Theory and Policy All courses must be passed with a grade of B or better Comprehensive Examination For the M.A. Degree Toward the en of the student’s last quarter of coursework, a comprehensive examination will be given in microeconomics and quantitative methods. The examination committee is comprised of at least three members of the economics faculty. Standards of Scholarship: In order to eligible for the Master of Arts degree, students must earn a “B” grade or better in all required MA courses and maintain at least a 3.0 overall GPA, receive a “pass” in both subject areas of the comprehensive examination, and meet all other university requirements.
