Information for Prospective Ph.D. Students
All of my current Ph.D. students are in the Department of Economics. I
am enthusiastic about supervising Ph.D. students in the Bren School of
Environmental Science and Management; however, I would expect such students
to undertake a rigorous set of economics classes in the the Economics Department
in addition to any other classes they might take in the Bren School and
elsewhere on campus. In other words, all of my Ph.D. students would be
expected to be well-trained in economics by the time they begin
work on their dissertation. Consistent with this, I would expect that
dissertation work would make a contribution to environmental economics. It
is not necessary to have much of an economics background before coming to
UCSB. Most important is a rigorous quantitative background, with a
significant amount of mathematics. Some policy experience is a big plus.
Although I support a few students with research assistantships, those
funds are limited and by no means guaranteed. Furthermore, I never have
funds to support first-year graduate students. Further information on
financial aid is available on the Bren School homepage.
Prospective Ph.D. students who feel their research interests are
consistent with mine should indicate on their graduate application that
they are interested in studying with me. In is not necessary to contact me
in advance; I will see the entire graduate application package when it is
complete.
