Economics 100B continues your introduction to the methods of microeconomics and applies these methods to the study of consumers, firms, and markets. This course will help develop your analytical and reasoning skills, which are necessary to understand many economic issues. The emphasis in this course is on reasoning and understanding, not memorization. The skills and methods you learn will find repeated application in further economics courses and in understanding your economic environment when you enter the workplace.
This course will cover Chapter 14-17, 24-29, and 32 or\and 34 (if time permitted). See the tentative Schedule.
Prerequisites: Economics 100A is required. Mathematics 34A-B and PSTAT 5E are also required. The course makes extensive use of algebra, graphs, and simple calculus.
Text:
Intermediate Microeconomics, 7th Edition, by Hal Varian, and Workouts in Intermediate Economics, 7th Edition, by Bergstrom and Varian.
Exams:
Exams in this class will be multiple-choice tests. For each exam bring a full-page, pink ParScore scantron and number 2 pencils. It is class policy that no electronic or mechanical devices are permitted, whether used or not, during an exam. Telephones, iPods (or their equivalent) and computers are not to be used, in sight or on the student's person during an exam. Any student observed with a device in hand or visible will be deemed in violation of class policy and given a failing course grade.
Midterm Exam 1 Tues., Oct 21 in class
Midterm Exam 2 Thurs., Nov 13 in class
Final Exam (cumulative) Wed., Dec 10
There are no make-up exams for any reason. Please clear your schedules now for these dates. If you have an emergency situation, you need to have an official document signed by an official authority.
Grading Policy
Midterm Exam 1 will count for 15 %
Midterm Exam 2 will count for 25 %
Final Exam will count for 60 %
In the past, mean (or median) is about B-.
